What is Powershoring?
Powershoring is an industrial and business strategy where energy-intensive industries relocate to regions with abundant, cheap, and low-carbon energy. Unlike strategies like nearshoring or friendshoring, which prioritize geographic proximity or geopolitical alignment, powershoring focuses entirely on clean energy access as the primary driver for factory placement. In essence, it aims to bring the industry to the clean energy rather than transporting clean energy to the industry.
This approach is highly relevant for "hard-to-abate" sectors like steel, aluminum, chemicals, and cement, where energy costs and emissions heavily impact competitiveness. By shifting production to renewable-rich areas, powershoring can lower global decarbonization costs, boost supply chain resilience, and turn resource-wealthy nations into strategic industrial hubs.

Why Green Finance Matters for Powershoring
Powershoring requires massive capital investments to build the necessary renewable energy infrastructure, industrial facilities, and logistics networks. To mobilize these resources at the speed required for the energy transition, a highly sophisticated green finance ecosystem is essential.
Fortunately, powershoring projects are ideal candidates for green finance instruments because they offer clear, measurable environmental benefits and reliable long-term cash flows.
